Technician Class Overview – Requirements, Allowed Frequencies & Operating Privileges

The Technician Class license is the entry point into amateur radio in the United States. It provides broad VHF and UHF access, limited but valuable HF privileges, and introduces new operators to fundamental radio concepts and FCC Part 97 rules. This guide outlines the Technician requirements, exam structure, permitted bands, and basic operating privileges to help new amateurs begin their radio journey confidently.

Eligibility & Requirements

To earn a Technician Class license, applicants must:

  • Pass the FCC Technician exam (Element 2)
  • Obtain an FCC Registration Number (FRN)
  • Submit exam fees through a licensed Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (VEC)
  • Follow the rules and regulations contained in FCC Part 97

Morse code is not required for any amateur radio license class.

Exam Structure – Element 2

The Technician exam consists of:

  • 35 multiple-choice questions
  • A passing score of 26 correct answers (74%)
  • Topics including:
    • FCC rules and station identification
    • Basic operating practices
    • Safety procedures and RF exposure
    • VHF/UHF operating methods
    • Basic electronic and radio theory

Operating Privileges

Technician Class licensees have full operating privileges on all amateur frequencies above 30 MHz and limited HF privileges.

VHF/UHF Privileges

Technicians have complete access to these commonly used VHF and UHF bands:

  • 6 meters (50–54 MHz)
  • 2 meters (144–148 MHz)
  • 1.25 meters (219–225 MHz)
  • 70 centimeters (420–450 MHz)
  • 33 centimeters (902–928 MHz)
  • 23 centimeters (1240–1300 MHz)

These frequencies support FM repeaters, simplex contacts, digital voice modes, APRS, satellites, and local/regional communication.
