Amateur Radio License Classes & Privileges

Welcome to the License Classes & Privileges section of the DX Ham Radio Supply Elmer Reference Library. Here you’ll find a clear overview of the three U.S. amateur radio license levels — Technician, General, and Amateur Extra — and what each allows you to operate.

Technician Class

The Technician Class is the entry-level license, requiring a 35-question exam covering radio theory, operating practices, and FCC rules. Technicians enjoy full privileges on all VHF and UHF amateur bands (50 MHz and above) and limited HF privileges on portions of the 80 m, 40 m, 15 m, and 10 m bands. Typical operation modes include CW, SSB, FM, and digital communication.

General Class

The General Class license expands HF privileges and requires a second 35-question exam that tests intermediate knowledge of electronics and propagation. General operators gain worldwide communication privileges on most HF bands, including 160 m, 60 m, 30 m, 17 m, 12 m, and 10 m, with up to 1,500 watts PEP output. This license opens the door to global DX and advanced station building.

Amateur Extra Class

The Amateur Extra Class is the highest level of licensing, earned through a 50-question exam that covers advanced electronics, digital modes, and complex regulations. Extra Class licensees receive full operating privileges across all amateur bands, including exclusive HF segments reserved for their use. They may also serve as Volunteer Examiners (VE) for amateur licensing sessions.

Each step up brings greater technical knowledge, responsibility, and access to new parts of the radio spectrum. Whether you’re starting your journey or advancing to the highest level, understanding the privileges of each class is key to growing as an operator.
